Zion Williamson arrived at New Orleans Pelicans camp slimmer, more outspoken, and clearly aware that his next chapter will be judged on much more than promise. He said he is still not at the level he wants, even after reporting at the best shape of his professional life.

The forward is listed at 277 pounds on the club’s training camp roster, which is seven pounds lighter than last season and the first meaningful change in a team listing that had stayed at 284 pounds for seven straight years. For a player whose body composition has often been part of the conversation, the number is only part of the story.

Conditioning Has Become the Main Topic

Williamson’s career has been defined by two competing truths: elite production when he is available, and too many stretches spent away from the floor. He entered the league as the first pick in 2019 and has already missed 278 games, including the entire 2021-22 season, mostly because of injuries and conditioning issues.

When he does suit up, he remains one of the league’s most difficult covers. He has averaged nearly 24 points per game for his career, using rare power and touch to finish through contact at the rim.

That is why the weight update drew attention. It signals not a summer makeover, but a longer pattern of work that the organisation believes actually matters.

• Listed weight: 277 pounds
• Previous listed weight: 284 pounds
• Games missed in his career: 278
• Career scoring average: just under 24 points per game

Joe Dumars Sees a Different Level of Buy-In

Joe Dumars, now in his second season leading basketball operations, praised Williamson’s arrival while making it clear that availability remains the real test. He described the forward as coming into camp in excellent condition and tied that directly to the demands of an 82-game season.

Dumars also made a point that has followed Williamson for years: some players need constant prodding, while others take ownership on their own. This time, he suggested the motivation started with Williamson rather than being forced from outside.

“At some point, you just want the player to get it,” Dumars said.

The message was careful but firm. New Orleans may appreciate the progress, but it is still waiting for that progress to translate into dependable availability.

A New Voice, a New Coach, and New Expectations

Williamson is about to play for his fifth head coach, with Jamahl Mosley now taking over after five seasons with the Orlando Magic. Mosley went 189-221 in Orlando, began with a 21-win roster, and helped guide the team to the playoffs in each of his final three years there.

His reputation centres on relationship-building and defence, and he spent time during the offseason visiting his new roster in person. Williamson said Mosley stays in touch often and treats players like people first, which carries real value for someone who has lived through constant turnover.

Mosley’s challenge is bigger than drawing up plays for a star scorer. He wants Williamson to become less predictable and to raise the people around him, not just his own numbers.

• Fifth head coach in Williamson’s NBA career
• Mosley’s Orlando record: 189-221
• Orlando playoff appearances under Mosley: three straight seasons
• Main question from Mosley: how Williamson can make teammates better

Even with that optimism, five coaches in eight seasons is hardly the sign of a settled environment. Williamson, though, said this offseason felt more stable because his relationships inside the room are stronger than before.

Winning First, Contract Talks Later

Williamson is eligible for a contract extension this season, but there is no rush to open that conversation. He still has two years left on his maximum-salary deal, and Dumars said the team would rather see how the season unfolds before discussing a new agreement.

Williamson agreed that the priority has to be team success. He will be extension-eligible again in the 2027 offseason, so there is time if the Pelicans can finally build some momentum.

That patience will be tested by the team’s recent results. New Orleans finished 26-56 last season, making it two straight years below 27 wins. The front office kept the offseason relatively quiet, largely holding the core together while adding wing scorer Bennedict Mathurin in free agency.

Health could be the biggest swing factor. Herb Jones, Trey Murphy III, and Dejounte Murray are all back at full strength after missing time last season, giving the roster a better chance to support Williamson.

The first practice of camp began on Tuesday, and the stakes are obvious. If Williamson stays healthy, New Orleans’ ceiling changes immediately.

His own goal is simple but significant: he wants to still be in a Pelicans uniform when the playoffs begin in April, something that has never happened in his eight seasons. The pressure around him is no longer just about talent. It is about converting a lighter body, a steadier routine, and a clearer mindset into actual results.
